In every daily national series this site holds, the days around Christmas are the quietest of the year, and Christmas Day itself is the quietest or second-quietest date in four of the five countries compared over the matched years 2007–2014. In the United States it ranks #366 of 366 at index 56, where 100 is an average day; in Denmark the quietest date is December 24 and in England and Wales December 26, with Christmas Day next. Malaysia, where the day is one public holiday among many, ranks #364. The second half of this page follows Christmas Day year by year: in each long series it has grown quieter, from index 84 in the United States of 1969 to 61 in 2014, and from 86 in France in 1968 to 73 in 2023. The series record births by date. Whether a quiet Christmas reflects scheduling, recording practice or something else is outside them.

A falling index means only that a smaller share of the year’s births fell on the day. In every one of these series a Saturday or Sunday records fewer births than a weekday, and December 25 falls on a weekend about two years in seven, so single years move with the calendar. The direction across decades outlasts single-year moves.
