Birthdays in India: what the official records show

India's Civil Registration System recorded 25,473,389 registered live births in 2024. The report consulted here publishes those totals by year and by state. This page shows that verified national registration series, and one state's official table of births by month, with the labelling ambiguity in that table stated plainly.

What the Indian records hold

The Civil Registration System annual report, published by the Office of the Registrar General of India, reports registered births by year and by state. A 366-date Indian ranking needs a table of births by calendar date, and this site publishes date rankings from such tables alone.

Registration counts are counts of registered events. The report's own totals are of registered events, which depend on registration completeness and on when a family registers, and the national table excludes some states in some years.

What the report itself says about comparing these years

The national table has its own notes, and they matter more than the trend line. They are reproduced here:

A series assembled under changing coverage is a record of registration, and the differences above are inside any small year-on-year move. The report states the exclusions.

Registered births in 2024 are 113.9% above the 1991 figure. That is a change in registered events. The series counts registrations, the states included change between years, and the report leaves registration completeness unmeasured, so the difference is shown as registrations.

What one state does publish: Kerala, by month

Kerala's Department of Economics and Statistics publishes an Annual Vital Statistics Report with a table of live births by sex and month. That is the finest official time breakdown found for any part of India in this pass, at the month level.

The 2024 report's twelve months sum to 344,766, which is exactly the report's annual registration total. The labelling of those twelve values is ambiguous in the document itself: Table B-4 heads them as month of occurrence, while the narrative table earlier in the same report presents the identical twelve values as month-wise registration. The report also shows 6,063 births (1.7586% of the total) registered more than a year after they occurred, so the set includes births from earlier years either way.

The national report's own state table gives Kerala 344,766 registered births for 2024, the same number the state report prints, so the two independent documents agree on the state total. That agreement is a check on the total.

By raw reported count, May is the largest month at 9.49% and December the smallest at 7.68%. Months differ in length, so part of any gap between a 31-day and a 28-day month is the calendar. That difference is left visible, because the rows are registrations.

Monsoon timing, festival calendars, marriage seasons and registration behaviour have all been proposed for Indian seasonality in the literature.

Sources, method and limits

Both documents were downloaded, checksummed and parsed with a script whose output is checked against each report's own printed totals; the source documents themselves stay with their publishers.

Every figure above comes from the administrative records named here, at the granularity those records publish: a day, a month or a year. Coverage and definitions differ between countries and eras, so two sources are combined only where their documentation states the windows are separate, and the page where that happens says so.
